Total acres in all of Martin County:

  • 355,584 total acres of land.
  • According to the University of Florida, Martin County has 555.6 sq. miles of land or 355,584 acres (+ 197.2 sq. mi of water = total 752.8 sq. mi).

Total acres inside the Urban Service District (USD):

  • 68,520 acres in unincorporated Martin County.
  • 6,803 additional acres within incorporated acres, that are inside the USD.

Total acres of agricultural land:

  • 222,223 acres outside the USB designated for agricultural land use.
  • This consists of 191,473 acres of agricultural land and 30,750 acres of ranchettes.

Total acres of anything else:

  • 44,161 acres of public conservation land, mostly outside USD.

Total wetlands:

  • Martin County has an estimated 65,634 acres of wetlands, of which 44,915 acres are in agricultural lands, according to Table 4-1 of the Evaluation and Appraisal Report (EAR).

Total existing residential units:

  • 66,119 houses built in Martin County as of 2010, using the EAR estimate of 2.21 people per housing unit.

Total residential units permitted to be built:

  • 4,900 approved, but unbuilt units, according to the EAR.
  • 108 building permits were issued this year, through December 9.

Vacant land capacity:

  • 9,009 unit capacity, according to the EAR.

Therefore, 13,909 housing units could be built tomorrow within the USD. As of Dec. 9, 2009, only 108 building permits were pulled for the entire year of 2009.
